A simple self-audit to see whether your homepage is clear, compelling, and donor-ready.
Show someone your homepage for five seconds, then close it. Ask them: what does this organization do? Who do they help? Would you trust them with a donation? Their answers reveal what your homepage is actually communicating — not what you intended it to communicate. Most nonprofit leaders are shocked by what people take away in those first five seconds. Often it's a tagline, a photo, and a vague sense of "they help people somehow."
Research on web behavior shows that users form a first impression of a website in about 50 milliseconds and decide within 8 seconds whether to stay or leave. If your homepage doesn't communicate clearly and quickly, the donor doesn't give you a second chance to explain. They're gone. This is especially costly for first-time visitors who found you through a search, a social media post, or a referral — people who arrived with genuine interest but no prior relationship.
Ask five people outside your organization — friends, family members, anyone who doesn't already know your work — to look at your homepage for five seconds. Then ask three questions: what does this organization do, who do they serve, and what should I do next? If you get consistent, clear answers, you're in good shape. If answers vary or people are confused, that's your roadmap. The most common failure point is the hero headline — the single most prominent text on the page.
You don't need a new website. You usually need a clearer headline. Something like: "We provide job training and housing support to refugees in Dallas" beats "Transforming lives through holistic community development" every single time. Concrete beats abstract. Specific beats general. Human beats institutional. Write your headline for someone who has never heard of you and has ten seconds to decide if they care.
